Mackay Visits CMA Shipping & Tours Staten Island Ferry

Several Mackay staff from GPC (Global Parts Ctr.) & Marketing attended the 40^th Annual CMA Shipping Conference (April 1-3) at the Stamford CT Hilton, 30 minutes north of NYC.

CMA Shipping Conference & Expo was well attended with a noticeable focus on sustainability, communications, integrated ship, future technologies, regulations and industry challenges. We chatted with partners including Furuno, USA , Wartsila (Transas), Marlink with cyber security Port-ITand viewed several Intellian new OneWeb Flat Panel LEO terminals.

We concluded our trip visiting the Staten Island Ferry (SIF) terminal at Port St. George.  As sole nav/comm electronics service contractor for the Staten Island Ferry Fleet since 2014, Mackay’s dedicated SIF Marine Technician escorted us onboard the Dorothy Day, the last of the three Ollis Class Ferries, received from Eastern Shipbuilding Group, & launched into service in 2023.   Mackay was integral in supplying ESG with communications systems, alongside partner Zenitel, on the Ollis Class ferries.

We were welcomed onboard by the SIF captain & crew; visiting the pristine navigation bridges, replicated at each end of the substantial 4500 passenger ferry (320’ long X 70’ wide).  Per NYC-DOT Stats, the 9 rotating ferries transport an average of 45k passengers on 117 trips daily, operating 24/7, and it’s FREE!

Mackay inspects each of 12 vessels monthly, with on-demand service, as needed; ensuring the navigation & communications electronics are functioning efficiently and for the safety of passengers and crew.

Next time you’re in New York, board a ferry from Staten Island, pass the Statue of Liberty, to Battery Park, Manhattan!
