Iridium has announced the next generation in satellite connectivity, the Iridium GO! Designed to be the most portable satellite voice and data device on the market, the Iridium GO! can be a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to 5 smartphones. Using the Iridium GO! app for iOS or Android, users can make and receive voice calls, send text messages or email, and enable GPS tracking of the device.
Combining smartphones with satellite has implications far beyond consumer use. Iridium is marketing the device to a range of end-users, including first responders, government, NGOs, fishing fleets, and more. The GO! is compatible with Iridium’s 2nd generation satellite constellation, Iridium NEXT, which is scheduled to launch in 2015 and should lend the device a much longer life span than a typical smartphone.
The compact device measures 4.5″x 3.25″ x 1.25″ with the satellite antenna stowed, and is dust-tight as well as water resistant for use in any conditions. External antenna options will be available, allowing the GO! to function from inside a vehicle or building.
Iridium GO! will be available in the first half of 2014 at an MSRP of $899. Unique airtime plans, including an Unlimited Plan, will be available at launch.
